Kendal Torchlight quiz night
Temple Heelis quiz team (Andy, Lauren, Peter, Richard and Yasmin) turned out at the first ever Kendal Torchlight fundraising quiz night at the Castle Green Hotel on Thursday 7th June.
The evening helped the committee raise nearly £3,000 for this September’s event. The team finished second, one point behind the winners from the Cumberland Building Society. This means in the last 6 outings TH have been placed first, first, first, second, first and second!
This was despite having two very low scoring rounds out of the seven. The team were not terribly clued up on the history of the Torchlight festival . We were able to guess that one of the two years that Ken Dodd was guest of honour was 1974, but we were wrong with our answer on the year famous multi grand National winner Red Rum had been the big draw. The other round that produced lots of furrowed brows was focused on the Castle Green itself. We got the opening hours of the gym right, but most others were just too hard. We were not prepared for questions like how many weddings had they had in the last five years and several similar statistical posers. We did not face a question about the average weight of the hotel guests (at both the start and end of their stay), or how many bath robes had been pinched, but the questions did require that sort of insight.
However, we did apply some brilliant deductive logic to the question of how many guests they had in 2017, and got our figure so close to the exact answer it was almost creepy and did raise the worrying possibility that chief deducer Yasmin actually spent her evenings with binoculars and counter lurking in the bushes behind the hotel and not watching Love Island as she claimed.
The point earned there, along with a flawless music quiz round (20/20) meant we were able to pip rival law firm Thomson Hayton Winkley and come so close to victory.
We also faired pretty well in the raffle, with Yasmin having 2 lucky tickets and taking home a Made in Cumbria hamper and a Penningtons tea and coffee selection.
To maximize our chances next year we will now start the search for the books “Kendal Torchlight -The definitive guide” and (just in case the venue moves next year) “500 things you did not know about Kendal’s hotels.. 2018 edition”).
